The U.S. Capitol and grounds are on security threat lockdown, with at least one person shot outside the U.S. Capitol building. An incident occurred at the north barricade vehicle access point along Independence Avenue where a vehicle rammed two U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) officers into a barrier. They were reported in critical condition and at 2:44 EST, one has been reported to have died from injuries.
“We’ve Been Attacked”, said an unidentified representative of the USCP.
This time the National Guard response at the U.S. Capitol in response to the attack was swift, in comparison to the Jan. 6 insurrection where it took hours for Capitol Police to receive military backup. A National Guard helicopter landed on the grounds of the Capitol, something that has never happened before, except when taking an outgoing U.S. President from an inauguration.
The Capitol has already been on a higher threat level since Jan. 6. There are two sets of barricades, one on each side of the Capitol, off Independence and Constitutional Avenues. They had been closed since the Jan. 6 insurrection and had just recently been re-opened. The Capitol is mostly empty
